Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is upon us, and while it is easy to carried away looking at all the shiny graphics, learning some of the more boring skills in combat will serve you well here.
While slicing Tyranids from ear to ear with your chainsword may be fun in Space Marine 2, even early on it is easy to get swarmed by multiple enemies and find yourself in more bother than you were expecting, especially on the tougher difficult levels.
The game encourages you early on to master the art of the parry as only a few steps into the tutorial you will be required to parry three times in order to progress onwards past the attacking Tyranids, but it is easy to gloss over what you just learned so let’s look at effective parry strategy right now.
How to parry
The basics are simple. As the enemy attacks, hit C and a successfully timed parry will deflect the blow and even kill smaller attackers. The thing is when you first start out and are instructed to do so, you will probably just end up mashing C to try and get the parries in without paying any real attention to when is the best time to play your block shot but there is more to it than that.
While you can certainly get lucky and pull off a parry by button mashing the problem can often be that you are being attacked by multiple enemies at the same time, meaning you should concentrate your focus on the one creating the biggest threat.
This is nearly always the closest enemy to you. While they will attack as a group there will generally be one you can position yourself to block first. If you press C and aren’t facing this attack the parry will fail and you will get hit. It’s all about awareness and timing.
When not to parry
When facing some stronger enemies, parrying is not an option as the attack can be too strong. If you are being attacked by something like a Tyranid leader and you see a red symbol, this is an attack that cannot be blocked with a simple parry move. You will need to dodge out of the way of this attack by timing a press of the spacebar. A successful dodge will then open up the boss to your counter.
