How to perform a PS5 factory reset
Before getting started on the factory reset, if you care about any of the data stored on the device, you’ll want to back it up.
There are two ways of doing this – migrating the data to an external device or backing up to the cloud if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber.
If you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber and want to opt for the cloud route, here are the steps you need to follow:
Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage.
If you’re opting for an external storage device, here is what you need to instead:
Connect a USB storage device, then navigate to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
With the data out of the way, let’s get into the actual PS5 factory reset process.
To initiate the factory reset, you need to access the settings menu on your PS5 which can be done by locating the Settings icon located in the upper right corner of the Home Screen.
In here, choose the System option and then System Software.
You’ll then need to locate the Reset Options choice at the bottom of the menu which will bring up three different options – Clear Learning Dictionary, Restore Default Settings, and Reset Your Console.
These all reset parts of the console in some form but if you want to enter a full factory reset just hit Reset Your Console.
Some parts will then complete and you will be given another prompt to continue. Hit Yes to complete the factory reset.
After going through the process, you’ll now have a fresh console that you can set up as if it were straight out of the box!
