Ever sat back enviously looking on at those cool kids on social media playing games like Gran Turismo and Assetto Corsa with their full racing rig setups. Ever wanted one, but know that you don’t have the room, but want to enjoy racing games more than just using a pad? Well, Gioteck may have an ingenious solution to your first-world problem in the shape of the FR5 Racing Wheel.
Billed as, “An ideal accessory for those taking their first steps into the driving genre, the FR5 Racing Wheel is the ideal companion for games such as My First Gran Turismo, a free-to-download trial version of Gran Turismo, crafted specifically for those new to the game, offering a streamlined, approachable experience.”
As you can see from the photo above, the FR5 is not what you would traditionally refer to as “a wheel”.
Rather it is designed to fit snugly around a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller and uses motion sensor support. Don’t be fooled though into thinking it is just a glorified Wii Controller because there is more to it that is not obvious from the above image. Behind that wheel is a wheelbase that clamps to your desktop and with every twist and turn. the wheel snaps back to center, allowing players to maintain complete control of the car. With dual metal bearings, sluggish steering is a thing of the past, instead offering smooth, frictionless control.
Now there is no motor involved but that is reflected in the price. The FR5 costs just £39.99 from Gioteck’s website.
The FR5 Racing Wheel is also compatible with PC and Steam Deck, allowing players to configure their favorite driving games via Steam software with seamless gyro functionality.
It does seem to be only compatible with the DualSense though so if you use a traditional Xbox controller like many PC gamers do, then this is not for you. But it is a neat idea and will enhance racing games for those whose use case it fits.
