Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gets Steam Deck boost and Square celebrates with a fluffy console mod

In a week where another incoming handheld may have taken a little of the spotlight from Valve’s mighty Steam Deck we now have the good news that next week’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – the PC iteration – has now been Steam Deck Verified.

For such a high-profile game to get Valve’s badge of honor is huge and means we can look forward to some serious Cloud Strife action on the bus – something we could only have dreamed of just a few years ago.

Publisher Square Enix is understandably delighted at getting Verified and revealed on its official account on X an amazing, fluffy yellow Chocobo-themed Steam Deck. Fortunately it’s not for sale and we doubt your Deck would last long as it cooked itself in its costume anyway, but it looks cool.

We looked at the PC Specs for FF7 Rebirth recently and to run it top notch you need a beast of a PC. Obviously we aren’t going to be doing this on the Steam Deck, but with the smaller screen, especially in OLED if you have that model, it is going to look amazing.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is released on 23rd January.

What is Steam Deck Verified?

Steam Deck Verified is Valve’s program that categorizes Steam games based on how well they work on the Steam Deck. The program is designed to help users find games that work well with their Steam Deck and minimizes the time spent frustratingly trying to get something to work when all you want to do is play games.

How does it work?

  • Valve reviews games in the Steam catalog to determine how well they work on the Steam Deck
  • Games that meet certain criteria are given the Steam Deck Verified badge
  • The Steam Deck Compatibility program shows the compatibility rating for each game in your library
