Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp down for some users around the world

Multiple large social media and websites around the world are currently experiencing problems. At the moment, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Etsy and the US Postal Service are all being hit by similar issues. No one knows what is causing the problem, and it might be a basic Infrastructure issue at Google Cloud or Amazon Web Services for Instance.

Facebook Acknowledges the issue

Facebook has acknowledged the ongoing issue, but have not given any details on what has caused it or what resolution is.

“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps,” it wrote on Twitter. “We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

The social media giant has disclosed that they believe this is NOT a result of a DDoS attack. A Distributed Denial-of-Service attack is a tactic used by hackers to overwhelm a network with fake network traffic. This makes the target system unable to respond to legitimate requests and appears offline.

Facebook user problems

Facebook users are reporting problems with logging on, posting new posts, or posting comments. Some are able to continue after multiple attempts. People are panicking into thinking their accounts have been hacked or blocked. Users are also reporting a message on the screen saying “Account Temporarily Unavailable.

Downdetector, a website used by users to report and raise awareness of a website with issues has had over 11,000 reports of this issue. These sorts of problems obviously affect users, but also advertisers that use the network to reach their global network. Facebook trading shares have not been affected, as of Wednesday.
