Apple Watch Series 4: What we know so far

While there hasn’t been many rumors surrounding the Apple Watch Series 4, the company reportedly registered six models of the watch with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) last week. This obviously means that it’s about time we see the next generation of the Apple Watch. But when exactly, and what the best selling smartwatch will have on offer this time around? Let’s have a look at everything we know so far about the forthcoming Apple Watch.

Apple Watch Series 4

Design

The Apple Watch might finally see a change in the design, starting with the Series 4. According to reports, this year’s Apple Watch will feature “a more trendy form factor design.” Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities suggests that the watches will sport a bigger display, possibly of 1.57-inch and 1.78-inch. The current Apple Watch models measure 1.32-inch and 1.5-inch diagonally, so that’s a big-big increase in display size.
We can’t imagine Apple making the Series 4 smartwatch’s case larger, so the possibility here is that the company will reduce the bezel side, and there’s a lot of room for that.

Specs

There’s hardly any concrete evidence on what the Apple Watch Series 4 will have under the hood. However, it’s almost certain that the watch will ship with an upgraded Apple S4 processor, offering better performance and improved efficiency.
The previous generation of the Apple Watch, Series 3, shipped with 16GB of storage, so we don’t expect the Series 4 to see a bump in storage. The Series 4 watches could, however, see an increase in the RAM size, from 768MB to 1GB. It’s also likely that Apple will move to Bluetooth 5 for the Apple Watch Series 4.

Features

The Apple Watch Series 4 will run on WatchOS 5. That’s more than enough a reason to expect new and improved features on the Series 4. The watch is expected to pack improved health-tracking options, an all-new walkie-talkie feature, and a Podcast app.
Late last year, Apple patented a “sunscreen detector” that can be used with a “mobile and/or wearable device.” The feature will enable Apple devices to monitor sun exposure and notify users when they should apply sunscreen. Now it remains to be seen if this feature makes its way into the Apple Watch Series 4 or not.
Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Watch with a plethora of fitness-focused feature. The watch saw an addition of 21 new exercises, along with a new stress manager, and an improved sleep tracker. So it’s likely that the next generation of Apple Watch will also introduce native sleep tracking, and many more fitness features.

Battery

An improved processor should bring improvements in the battery life too. But to keep up with the pace of robust smartwatch usage, Apple surely needs to increase the battery capacity too. The Series 4 watch could see a bigger battery, but Apple has other ways to improve battery life as well. Apple might also use a MicroLED display instead of OLED one, which could significantly increase the battery life.

Price and release date

We, of course, have no details as how much the next Apple Watch will cost at the moment. Presumably, we will see a modest increase over the Apple Watch Series 3 to account for the larger display and improved internals.
As far as release date is concerned, our best guess is September 2018, where we are likely to see the launch of the next iPhone as well. Stay tuned as we gather more official info about the same.
