Recently, there has been an update to Android Oreo 8.1 for Pixel and Nexus devices, while Android Oreo will be available for lower-end devices. Google also revealed which Android Wear smartwatches will be receiving an update to bring them up to Android 8.0 Oreo.
This announcement was made on the ” Android Wear Developers ” Google Plus group. The last Wear’s update was the Android Wear 2.0. At the moment, The flagship LG WATCH SPOT seems to be the only supported watch on the Android 8.0 Oreo. The move to Oreo might not be noticed by most users. Like the Android TV, Android Wear contains its own interface and set of features separately designed from the base OS version. This update to Oreo will result in a lot of transformation on the OS, one thing still remains unchanged – the user-facing features.
Android wear has been doing quite badly in the market. Taking third place at 18%, while Samsung’s Tizen OS came in at 19% and the Apple Watch had 57 percent of the market. The major problem with Wear is quality smartphone chips. Apple and Samsung produce their own chips with a more up-to-date manufacturing process, which results in smaller, faster, and cooler chips. Despite the challenges, Google is bidding their time in rolling out their watches as they are waiting for the go-ahead signal from the manufacturers.
For now, Andriod Oreo 8.1 is available on Fossil Q Venture, LG Watch Sport, Movad Connect, Tommy Hilfiger 24/7, Guess Connect etc. Android wear is yet to give a date on the update for watches that are pursuing the Android Oreo 8.1.
