Amazon developing major AI model, following latest Anthropic investment

Amazon is said to be working on an AI video model to be used specifically for video and image analysis.

According to a report from The Information, the e-commerce giant is developing a generative AI project to be less reliant on its partner, the AI startup Anthropic.

At present, Amazon leans heavily on the Claude chatbot including its use on Amazon Web Services.

Referred to as Olympus, the new Amazon LLM will be able to make sense of content from images and videos, allowing users to search for certain scenes using a relatively simple text prompt.

Olympus announcement could come next week

Amazon renewed its commitment to Anthropic last week with a $4 billion injection into the company to take a minority stake.

Both entities shared the news they are commencing a strategic collaboration in the AI space, with the startup unsurprisingly tapping Amazon Web Services as its primary cloud provider.

AWS customers will receive early access to special features for customizing models, such as the ability to build via Amazon Bedrock.

“The agreement is part of a broader collaboration to develop the most reliable and high-performing foundation models in the industry,” the companies said in an official announcement.

The report from The Information indicated an announcement on Olympus could come as early as next week at the annual AWS re:Invent customer conference, according to sources close to the matter.

Anthropic showcased its Claude 3 family of AI models earlier this year and it remains to be seen whether Amazon will deploy the existing multimodal LLMs made by its partner or if it wants to strike out with its own offering.
