Amazon Alexa comes to your Samsung smartwatch – Galaxy Watch, Gear Sport and Gear S3

Samsung wearables are definitely a popular choice with us and many of our readers. We probably were the first blog to follow every step of Tizen in smartwatches. Initially, the devices came with Samsung S-Voice, but now Samsung is Introducing Bixby to their wearables. But what if you wanted Amazon Alexa on your Samsung Smartwatch? You were out of luck, until now!

Amazon Alexa comes to Samsung smartwatches

You can actually use Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant on your Samsung smartwatch now. XDA Member dmehers‘s app named “Voice in a Can” brings Alexa to your Tizen watch. You can however only run the app on Tizen 4 or above, so at the moment that would mean the Samsung Galaxy Watch, Gear S3 Classic, Gear S3 Frontier, and Gear Sport. You should also be able to run it on the upcoming Galaxy Watch Active.

This is a standalone Alexa app that does not need your smartphone but does need some sort of Internet access. To make it work you only need a Amazon account. In order to have fast access to it, you can assign it to a double press of the home button and you are away.

What can you do? Well, you can theoretically do “most” of the things you can normally do with the official Alexa App or an Amazon Echo device. You can not make calls to Echo devices, which would have been GREAT. I suppose I will have to experiment with what can and can be done.

Installing Voice In a Can Amazon Alexa App

There was a short Beta trial for the App that started last month but has now ended. You can find the app in the Galaxy Store by following this link.

Once Installed you need to enter a URL on your desktop. Go to the URL that is displayed on your watch. In my case, as I live in the UK, it is https://amazon.com/gb/code, the country portion of the URL will be different for you ie US/ IT/ NL etc.

How to Assign Alexa to a hardware button

If you would like to assign Voice In a Can Alexa App to a hardware button, replacing Bixby, you can do the following:

Swipe from the top -> Select Settings -> Advanced -> Double press home key -> Select VoiceInACan.
