How Self-Driving Cars Can Shape Our Future

To keep up with the pace of the changing trends of the world and its modified technological implications, presently, the self-driving cars is what humanity is looking forward to. Can these self-driving cars effectively shape the future lying ahead of us? The other questions would be — how would these self-driving cars change or shape the future?

Self-driving cars are different from the technical stalwarts we may think about. Now, the concept of the self-driving car is moving along with the automotive ideas of ridesharing companies, including Google, Tesla, Apple, Uber, and Lyft.

Companies that are moving forward with the self-driving car are each focusing on a different, distinct aspect of these vehicles.

These cars will prove beneficial to Uber and Lyft, especially in terms of efficient cost-cutting strategies. Still, unfortunately, there seem to be no positive prospects in the realms of fiscal expediency of the contributing companies.

The rate of traffic accidents.

Reports that were conducted to study the rate of traffic accidents, and their causes have affirmed that around 94% of the total cases reported were sourced from common human errors. The human error factor is primarily the reason why most people believe that the self-driving vehicles would be useful and less disastrous on our streets.

Additionally, cars that do not require drivers to drive them are accompanied by a string of advantages such as lower fuel consumption, reduction in traffic congestion, and reduced emission of CO2.

In what ways can self-driving cars change our future for better?

  • Zero road tragedies.

Many vehicle incidents that occur daily are reported to be caused by rash and irrational behavior or driving. These behaviors cause all kinds of chain reactions and side effects. When a car is on the road and malfunctions at any point, it is not merely this singular vehicle that faces the heat of the aftermath.

The surrounding automobiles and pedestrians witness and feel the emotional outcome of malfunctions on the road. But an equal share in consequence of accidents can come from other vehicles or other drivers who are not paying attention. If you are off on the side of the road and another driver is not paying attention, you or your vehicle could be hit — incurring further injury.

Nevertheless, the chances of generating accidents cannot be wholly steered away from in the case of autonomous cars; for instance, in 2018, an automatic Uber got stuck in the middle of the road and killed an innocent pedestrian.

Another instance of a similar tragedy was reported only a few months later when the driver of a Tesla X Model was killed when the car on autopilot.

Taking into consideration these examples, one thing that must be confirmed here is that safety should be the highest priority even when compared with the human-driven vehicles. The settings of these cars don’t allow any human intervention in cases of emergency. So, these vehicles must be secured with products and technologies formed by different component providers.

Software and hardware manufacturers and developers will have a higher liability with the vehicles in the future. The focus is to arrive at a mechanism that is thoroughly and efficiently functional, reliable, and safe to be employed on all roads.

Some of the mechanisms of self-driving vehicles have directly led to the introduction of 5G. 5G helped to welcome a platform of development for the self-driving riders. The 5G technology will let the owners communicate with the other cars on the road to formulate collaboration with them and drive in sync with one another.

In the future, as technology advances, it can be said that these self-driven cars will be the only vehicles that move correctly and obey all traffic regulations. The history of cars and vehicles may end up presenting us with zero road tragedies in the future.

  • Potential of changing the world.

We need to keep the wavering threats of environmental depreciation in mind. If we want to outline something that makes way for reduced traffic and greenhouse gas emission along with the parking requirements, it would inevitably be the self-driving electric cars that also offer the privilege of sharing rides.

Another pointer that we must not forget here is that self-driving cars are capable of driving anywhere and at any time. They will not have to be examined and surveyed by trained drivers and can function equally when utilized by any driver regardless of their ages and levels of expertise.

The self-driving characteristics of future cars also have a financial ingredient associated with them.

When the cars active on the road will allow public sharing, the transport costs will invariably reduce from two dollars a mile to only 20 cents. The numbers show this as proof to be a significant boost in the country’s overall economy.

Even when this development is considered from a personal level, these cars will waive off the customary dependence of college-goers and old citizens to depend upon their drivers to take them places and consequentially restore their freedom.

Moreover, the hotels and restaurants that have been built along the roadsides tom procure long-route drivers with a safe shelter to rest for the night are most likely to face serious competition as the drivers can rest their eyes in their moving vehicles itself.

  • New technologies call for new challenges.

Every new invention that comes with several advantages and responsibilities to shape a better future is also attached to unique problems. The first challenge mentioned is that self-driven cars would ensure unemployment.

The claimed unemployment might be because none of the procedures involved would require human settings. The executives at work in Lyft suggested that the cars can become mechanics after being replaced as drivers.

Nevertheless, this idea seems nothing but bizarre for most of the drivers because not everybody possesses the set of skills required for their smooth functioning as mechanics.

Moreover, truck and taxi drivers will have to be retrained. These drivers would need to be furnished with the information on remote monitoring and teleoperation of vehicles. Along with that information would be the reimagining the real estate suitable for AVs.

Also, before arriving at a sturdy fully-automated dream, there are multiple concerns about developments that appreciate and make way for reckless driving.

We will likely still have ethical dilemmas about fraudulent issues and over who is to be blamed and held responsible when there is a failure in these autonomous mechanisms.
