Enterprise Startup Spotlight: eXo, Keeping Java Alive in the Enterprise

eXo offers an open source Java framework for enterprise social software tools. It includes reusable components for building content management systems, user management tools, activity streams, e-mail integrations, mashups and more.

This week it announced Cloud IDE, a Web-based development environment for cloud applications.

Along with companies like SpringSource, eXo is keeping enterprise Java alive by simplifying the development process and providing easy access to modern tools. For example, eXo Platform has built-in multi-tenancy support. It’s also compatible with other Java middleware such as JBoss and SpringSource.

eXo was founded in France by CEO Benjamin Mestrallet in 2002. Mestrallet moved to San Francisco in 2009 when the company opened a U.S. headquarters there.

eXo started as an open source project, making an open source Java portlet container. It landed its first customer, the U.S. Department of Defense, in 2003. Other customers include Generali, Orange and Société Générale.

The original eXo Portal project was merged with JBoss GateIn in 2009 and remains a component of eXo Platform.

Although it was founded in 2002, eXo received $6 million in series A funding in 2010 from Auriga Partners and Drupal and Microsoft SharePoint.
