KnowledgeTree Makes Upgrades to its Open Source Document Manager

KnowledgeTree, the open source document management system for the enterprise, has a new release featuring some small but significant updates to their software.

In the 3.6.1 version announced yesterday, KnowledgeTree has ramped up their alerts feature with specification by document type, and added configurable electronic signatures, easing the burden of regulatory compliance.

KnowledgeTree has also launched the first edition of a Microsoft Office add-in, increasing its ability to compete with Microsoft SharePoint and other open source alternatives.

Document Type Alerts

The new alerts functionality in KnowledgeTree allows for more flexible and detailed notifications to users about a class of documents, either through email or an internal alerts dashlet.

Configurable Electronic Signatures

Government agencies such as the FDA require businesses to keep a complete audit trail in documentation, electronic or not. While the electronic signatures are something of a nightmare in that they require users to enter a name and password every time they edit a document, it’s better than finding yourself hit with non-compliance by a regulatory agency.

Microsoft Office Add-in

Interoperability with the Office suite is nothing new in document management. Other solutions, like

, have had it for quite some time. That said, the interface for the add-in is still quite nice, with the ability to view, edit, save and email documents from either Word, Excel or PowerPoint.

Meshing well with Office is key to any serious attempt to capture part of today’s enterprise market, and with this added functionality, KnowledgeTree can now keep pace both with SharePoint and other open source document management tools.
