Many users have long sought the ultimate app for mashing up Twitter and online video. Several services have emerged in this space, but many that we tested have been found wanting.
Today, we’ve been playing with TwitVid.com and the new, free TwitVid iPhone app. Both have greatly impressed us with a simple, well-integrated interface and just the right balance of great function without feature bloat. Does TwitVid have what it takes to win the Twitter-come-video game?
With a range of options for capturing and uploading video, we think TwitVid stands a good chance.
First, users have the option of recording and tweeting video using their webcams. Second, they can upload prerecorded video – a great choice for broadcasting branded content, music videos, etc. Third (and arguably best), users can upload video via mobile, particularly the new TwitVid iPhone app, which we’ve been focusing on testing today.
We love how the finished product looks on the web. The TwitVid site takes on the look and feel of the user’s Twitter page and shows Twitter conversations containing the user’s TwitVid video links. Meebo-powered chat, comments, and video responses are enabled, and both the related chats as well as the videos themselves can be embedded.
Videos can also be autoposted and shared on YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace, and on other sites through an embeddable TwitVid widget. Users can also share videos captured on non-iPhone mobiles by emailing videos to a personalized address.
We also tested the limits of upload sizes with a six-minute video. It took about 20 minutes to upload but ultimately posted without a hitch.
Of course, there are always features we’d like to see added. An in-device/in-browser editor for clipping videos would be awesome, and so would the ability to download videos. And the option to upload longer videos would be great.
So, all things considered, does TwitVid have what it takes? We think so. Test it for yourselves and let us know what you think in the comments.
