It’s F-Zero Jim but not as we know it – new Early Access PC racer inspired by Nintendo classic goes live and even has a downloadable demo

When it comes to emulating my favorite games on the Super Nintendo one go-to is always F-Zero. Original players will still remember the feeling of speed and how it was their first look at the machine’s incredible Mode 7 graphics that allowed the background layer to be rotated and scaled at speed.

Mode 7 and F-Zero were both groundbreaking and, while we have had other games in the F-Zero franchise, the first one was always the one that stuck in the mind for being just that.

These types of fast sci-fi racers, while not exclusively, have mainly been found on consoles – the PlayStation got Wipeout for example, but the PC has rarely been able to join in the fun, being left to emulate the classics instead.

Now, one-man developer Aaron McDevvitt is aiming to change that with his new game Aero-GPX. This homage to F-Zero and F-Zero GX has gone into Early Access on Steam today, with the potential for a Nintendo Switch version in the future and it is a fantastic high-speed blast through futuristic landscapes that manages to generate a true feeling of speed and responsiveness.

McDevvitt says of his game, “Aero GPX aims to be one of the most responsive racing experiences you’ve ever played; responding instantly to your input and reacting accordingly. Instead of feeling like you’re driving the machine, Aero GPX aims to give you the feeling of controlling the machine as if it were a character in an action game.”

With 15 tracks and 15 ships to fly and race this gravity racer has a lot more content planned along its journey to a full release and you can even check it out before purchasing by downloading the free demo that is also on Steam – it really is like we have traveled back to the good old days of gaming.
