[Poll] Is The iPhone 5 A Home Run For Apple?

The day the new iPhone is announced is like Gadget Christmas. Everybody waits all year to see what it is going to look like, what new features are packed inside, when it will hit the market. Now that the iPhone 5 is here, does it live up to your expectations? Let us know in the poll below.

This year, the rumor cycle, normally wildly inconsistent, was pretty accurate about the iPhone 5. The screen is bigger (4-inches against 3.5-inches), it has improved Retina display (1136×640 pixels) and is thinner and lighter.

As expected, the iPhone 5 will be released with 4G LTE compatibility in almost every part of the world where LTE is available. So, the iPhone 5 data connection will be fast. Apple also claims that the A6 processor doubles the performance of the iPhone 5 over the A5 processor found in the iPhone 4S. The battery is improved to handle the bigger screen and processor.

The camera has new optics (a sapphire lens) and software to manage it. Siri is more robust and iOS 6 adds new features like Facebook integration. There is really no question about it: the iPhone 5 is the best iPhone that Apple has produced. But nobody thought that the iPhone 5 would be a complete dud. Most people wondered how good Apple could make it.

And that is the most pertinent question now that we know what the iPhone 5 is: Is this a home run for Apple?

As Dan Frommer pointed out this morning, the iPhone is Apple’s most important product, making up between 50% and 60% of its revenue. There is no doubt that the iPhone 5 will sell extremely well and already people are drooling over their wallets, waiting to order one when pre-orders start on Friday. The future of the Apple is safe with the iPhone 5.

People are bound to be disappointed by the new “Lightning” connector, especially the $30 for an adaptor. Overall, that is not a huge argument against Apple though. The 30-point connector on the previous phones has been around since 2003; it was due for an upgrade. Will people be disappointed that there is no Near Field Communications (NFC) in the iPhone 5? Almost every iPhone competitor has integrated NFC at this point, with Apple holding out year after year.

Let’s put this in baseball terms.

  • Is the iPhone 5 a home run for Apple? Does it beat expectations every which way?
  • Or, maybe it is a triple. Great advance for Apple but it did not quite get it out of the park.
  • A double? Good, but hoping for more.
  • Single: Just an iterative update, Apple could have done so much better.

Take the poll below and let us know in the comments how you think Apple did with its latest iPhone. Does it rock your world or are you left wanting more?
