Groupon Make Sales Numbers More Private

Groupon is dramatically changing how they display the number of deals people purchased. Soon you’ll only be able to see the percentage rather than the exact number of deals purchased.

Earlier today the company announced that, “Instead of showing the exact number of Groupons purchased, the counter is now reduced by a random percentage – sometimes 0.5%, sometimes 19.5%, or anything in between.”

Groupon began testing this new approach at the end of September; the new changes will go into affect across the site in the next few weeks.

One of these changes is already live: The Groupon count now starts with the word “over X number of deals” bought instead of telling you the exact number of deals bought, as seen here:

Previously, Groupon would show you exactly how many people bought a deal:

This change shows the popularity of individual deals while keeping Groupon’s sales numbers more private.

Groupon’s new deal changes come shortly after negative press about the company’s upcoming IPO, and accusations that the company’s rapid growth was slowing. CEO Andrew Mason denied all of those accusations.

Groupon has come a long way, evolving tremendously since 2008. After Amazon announced that it was jumping into the daily deals space this past August, Groupon has stepped up its game.
