Last week, ReadWrite Editor-in-in-Chief Dan Lyons sat down with 27-year-old Box CEO Aaron Levie to discuss the complex market of enterprise cloud technology in the third ReadWrite Mix event in San Francisco.

When not discussing his hilariously-named teenage startups or early ambitions to join the MLB, the one-hour sit-down saw Levie and Lyons discussing nearly every facet of the enterprise software business, from how it started and what is now to how Box aims to lead the way into its uncertain future.

This 2:19 clip illustrates Levie's uncanny ability to make even the most seemingly mundane topics - the growth of data storage - sound fascinating As storage costs go down, Levie sees Box's opportunity to give away more space at a lower price. "Probably in the future, you will use us for infinite storage," he says, because "the amount of capacity we have is increasing at a faster rate than our ability to use it."

In their wide-ranging, hour-long conversation, Lyons and Levie touched on just about every topic of interest in the enterprise startup space. But perhaps the most interesting aspects concerned Levie's own unique story. This 1:53 clip touches on how growing up in Seattle helped inspire Levie to begin starting companies as a teenager (publishing HTML webpages to the Internet was all it took, he says), and how he had to try his hand at countless projects on the way to his dream of starting a successful company. Levie did acknowledge an alternate dream that included playing professional sports: "It's either MLB, or start an Internet company," he joked.

Last Wednesday, ReadWrite Editor-in-in-Chief Dan Lyons sat down with 27-year-old Box CEO Aaron Levie to discuss the complex market of enterprise cloud technology in the third ReadWrite Mix event in San Francisco.

In the one-hour sit-down, Lyons and Levie covered surprisingly diverse topics, from Levie's personal life as a notorious workaholic to what it means to sit in the middle of the enterprise and consumer software landscape that has steadily begun to merge. Levie also showcased his sense of humor with descriptions of the companies he started as a teenager (Zazap, the fastest search engine on the Internet - except for Google), and spot-on caricatures of stuffy enterprise types to illustrate how he keeps his company loose and fast-moving.

This 2:28 video touches on Levie's thoughts on having grown up in the startup landscape with his high school friends, the laughable stereotype of enterprise software culture and seeking out mentors in Silicon Valley (Hint: There's no risk to to sending an email. So what if you don't get a response, he says).

Lyons and Levie touched on a wide array of subjects, from sly stabs at Microsoft to how Box grew from a dorm room project to the forefront of cloud storage and collaboration. Levie also shared some of his wisdom on how to outmaneuver the competition, understand the early mover conundrum and keep delivering better technology.

This 2:48 video touches on the uncertainties facing enterprise software companies like Box, as well as the opportunities that lay ahead in a market where, as Levie says, it's not clear where one service starts and another service stops.

The second ReadWrite Mix was a riot. Dan Lyons interviewed former Apple evangelist, current unofficial Google evangelist, tech entrepreneur and prolific author Guy Kawasaki. Hilarity ensued.

Working At Apple, Living With Google

Dan asked Guy about working with Steve Jobs. Guy told his legendary story about the day he "passed the Steve Jobs test." Jobs came to Guy's cubicle one day with an unknown man and asked him what he thought of a company called Knoware. Guy gave his unvarnished opinion, which was highly critical. Then Jobs motioned to the other man and said, "Guy, this is the CEO of Knoware."

As mortifying as it was, Guy figures Jobs would have canned him if he had given some airy, suck-up answer

"Working for Steve Jobs was the formative experience of my life," Guy said. "I was never in the total reality distortion field, though. I still knew which way was up and down."

Guy mentioned that the first time he saw the Macintosh was a "religious experience," but he also said the same thing about Google+. "Google+ to me is the Macintosh of social media," Guy said. "Google+ is to Facebook as Macintosh is to Windows." And though he basically invented Apple evangelism, now he's an Android devotee.

Why the change? "I know how to discern good stuff," Guy said. "When I was focused on personal computers, it was Macintosh. Now, I want to be able to make an independent decision. I don't want to have to be loyal to Apple for the rest of my life. I want to be loyal to what is best. I think Android is best."

He pointed to the alphabetical list of apps, NFC, multiple apps in windows, and widgets as his favorite Android features. He also pointed to some of Apple's decisions, such as going with a proprietary cable instead of USB, as unfriendly to consumers.

The Business Of Books

The main thread of Guy and Dan's conversation was how to write, publish, and market a book. Guy has done that 11 times, and his latest is APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur - How to Publish a Book. Clearly, he had plenty to say on this subject.

"It's not so hard to write a book," Guy said. "It's not so hard to publish a book. What's hard is marketing and selling it." He recommended spending an hour a day on social networks stirring up conversation about the subject matter. "The day you start writing your book is the day you start building your platform. Life for an author is a parallel process."

It's hard work, but Guy swears by self-publishing. It has allowed him to do unorthodox things like give away sponsored copies of his books for free and other things traditional publishers wouldn't let him do. Does he worry about piracy of e-books? Sure, but he says an author shouldn't get hung up on it. "At some point, you have to just say, 'At least they're talking about you.'"

There was some wisdom at Wednesday's event, and there was also some silliness. "I don't know why you're listening to me," Guy said. "I was stupid enough to quit Apple twice." It was just the right mix. Guy has a wealth of experience, and it was an honor to have him at ReadWrite Mix.

No doubt you've heard of Guy Kawasaki. He first became famous as an Apple evangelist. In fact he's the guy who more or less invented the idea of brand evangelism. Since then he's published 11 books, including the best-selling Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds and Actions, and launched a website, Alltop, that's a kind of online magazine rack. In addition to all that, Guy is a fantastic person, a terrific storyteller with lots of experience and wisdom. Several years ago, when my novel, Options: The Secret Life Of Steve Jobs, came out, Guy hosted an event at the Computer History Museum where we got on stage together and told tales about Apple.

Now Guy has a book coming out, called APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur - How to Publish a Book, and to celebrate this sacred event I've invited him to come up to San Francisco and let me grill him on stage for a while. The fun happens next week -- Wednesday Dec. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Say Space at 180 Townsend Street in San Francisco.

You can register for the event here.

We'll talk about the new book, about the concept of enchantment (which comes up again in the new book), about startups in Silicon Valley and probably about Apple, because I don't think Guy goes anywhere without people asking him about Apple.

We'll have free drinks and snacks, a lively Q&A where you can ask Guy questions, and lots of schmoozing. Our last event, in November, was a total blast with a great audience, and we're hoping to have even more fun this time.

Again, you have to register in advance. Hope to see you.

The first-ever ReadWrite Mix event last week was a blast. And perhaps the most fun part came when ReadWrite editor in chief Dan Lyons brought global technology visionary Vivek Wadhwa on stage to show off a $20 tablet computer and discuss worldwide trends that challenge our parochial perceptions of the future of technology.

Panelists: Vivek Wadhwa, Kara Swisher of AllThingsD, Owen Thomas of Business Insider, and Aaron Ricadela of Bloomberg Businessweek

If you want in on the next ReadWrite Mix on December 12, RSVP here (its free!), and do it pronto, because the first one filled up in the blink of an eye.

We spend most days digging up the details, so the live event was a welcome chance to make some broad observations and grand predictions about where the big-name tech leaders are taking their companies:

Introducing ReadWrite Mix - Join Us In The Real World

Despite our passionate and undying love of all things Internet, lately a few of us here at ReadWrite have been thinking we should pay a little more attention to the time we spend offline, in what used to be known as the real world. That's why we've created our ReadWrite Pause Series, exploring ways to balance our online and offline lives.

It's also why we are launching a new series of events, called ReadWrite Mix, which will take place in the real world, with real people talking to other real people, drinking real drinks and making (we hope) real connections.

These will take place at ReadWrite's real world headquarters in the hipster-filled SoMa neighborhood in San Francisco. It's a chance to meet some of the crew from Say Media and ReadWrite, including managing editor Fredric Paul and ace reporter Jon Mitchell.

Starting Next Thursday!

The first ReadWrite Mix will be next week, on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 6-8 p.m. You need to RSVP (go here to sign up) and please note that space is very limited, so please sign up as soon as possible.

To kick off the series, we're doing a "media predicts" panel with Kara Swisher of AllThingsD, Owen Thomas of Business Insider, and Aaron Ricadela of Bloomberg Businessweek.

We'll be talking about what 2013 might look like for Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Square, Microsoft and others. The main thing is that we're all pretty opinionated and though we don't always agree on things we're actually pretty good friends - so it's a chance to have some fun. I'll be moderating and putting people back into neutral corners or giving them time-outs when they misbehave.

A Monthly Event

We're hoping to make this a monthly event where we will host interesting guests - CEOs, investors, authors - and gather a crowd of hacks, flacks, nerds, geeks, techies, pundits and schmoozers for an evening of thought-provoking fun. Sometimes we'll do a panel, but other times we'll do a one-on-one fireside chat. (We have an amazing guest lined up for December, but I'm sworn to secrecy on it for now.)

We love chronicling the incredible ways in which technology is transforming the world, but it occurs to us that in the madness of chasing down the news every day it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. We think there's value to be gained in stepping back, slowing down and taking a few minutes to pause and reflect. It's great to make friends on Facebook or gain followers on Twitter, but nothing beats making connections in real life.

In the new ReadWrite we're all about trying to engage with our readers and build a community. Ultimately what we want to create is not so much a publication as a conversation, one where everyone has a voice. ReadWrite Mix is just another part of that effort.

SoMa (for South of Market street), the neighborhood where we're working, is home to dozens of companies that are transforming the Internet and changing our lives. It's an incredibly concentrated cluster of innovative brains. We want to create a place where all those creative people can gather once a month to talk and argue and brainstorm. In our wildest dreams, if we're really lucky, ReadWrite Mix could become a place where new ideas are born.

So please: come join us. Become part of this. We'll provide the space, and the drinks, and we'll get the conversation started. The rest is up to you.

In case you missed it up above, you can sign up here.
