Five Common iOS 8 Complaints And How To Fix Them

iOS 8 is by no means as dramatic an upgrade as iOS 7, but people are still finding plenty of features to complain about.

Some user complaints, like the 5GB space required to download the update, are intractable. And some features, or lack of, like the newly vanished camera roll, are unfixable.

Fortunately, plenty of small annoyances are easily resolved. We checked Twitter and Google for people’s most popular iOS complaints and figured out how to solve them here.

Delete The U2 Album

Somehow we live in a world where free music is something to whine about. Fortunately, if you’re one of the thousands stricken by this injustice, there’s hope.

According to Apple’s support document, all you need to do is navigate to http://itunes.com/soi-remove, click Remove Album to confirm your choice, and log in to your iTunes account to verify your identity.

Save Old Messages

iOS 8’s Messages application has undergone a series of upgrades that make it easier to remove old texts more slowly or quickly, whichever you prefer.

To change how long messages are retained, launch the Settings application, select the Messages option, and toggle the “Keep Messages” selection. You can choose to have messages delete immediately, save for 30 days, or save for one year.

Turn Off The ‘QuickType’ Keyboard

Also called a “smart keyboard,” many consumers are finding it to be anything but. The keyboard is designed to predict your next word and suggest options.

Turning it off is simple. Inside the Settings application, select General and navigate to Keyboard. From there you can set “Predictive,” for predictive text, to off.

Toss Photos For Good

If you’re a Mac user you might be familiar with iPhoto’s photo trash bin. It keeps you from deleting photos by mistake by delegating them to a holding location up until the point you manually choose to delete them permanently. Now your iPhone has that, too.

If you don’t want those trashed photos taking up space on your phone, you can go into Photos’ “Recently Deleted” folder. Hit “Select” and then “Delete All.” Unfortunately, there isn’t a faster or more succinct solution to making deleted photos really delete.

Slow Performance

Some users are reporting that their phones work more slowly with iOS 8 installed. While psychologists have reason to believe that it’s all in your head, you can try this:

Navigate to the Settings application, then General. From here you can click “Reset” and then select “Reset All Settings.” You may need to input your passcode for this to work. This won’t delete your apps or data, but it might fix any stray bugs making it slower than normal.
