Twitter Re-Restricts The Direct-Message Inboxes It Just Opened

Twitter has apparently removed the feature that let unverified users receive direct messages from any follower. The company introduced the feature to select users last month, and was never clear as to whether it planned to extend it to more, or all, of its user base.

Apparently not. Which may lend credence to the rumor that a standalone Twitter messaging application is in the works.

Twitter didn’t respond to a request for comment, although Mathew Ingram of GigaOm noted that when asked about the recent update, Twitter directed him to a blog post reminding users that the company is constantly experimenting:
