Amazon Launches iPad Kindle Store to Dodge Apple’s Restrictions
Amazon has launched a more touch-friendly, Web-based iPad Kindle Store. A tablet-optimized Kindle store was available through the HTML5 Kindle Cloud Reader Amazon launched last August, but the new iPad Kindle Store is a standalone Web app. Upon visiting amazon.com/iPadKindleStore from Safari, a pop-up prompts the user to add it to the home screen. Chinese Smartphone Maker Passes Apple Globally, Targets U.S.
Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE jumped ahead of Apple worldwide last year, according to IDG. ZTE doubled its shipped products in the fourth quarter of 2011 over the third and increased year-over-year by almost 60%. They now own just under 5% of global market share. (more)
Can Email Save The U.S. Postal Service?
Email, long seen as the scapegoat in the downfall of the US Postal Service, could be its savior, according to a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor.
Shiva Ayyadurai, who was the first to copyright the term “EMAIL,” is working on a proposal for the USPS to enter the email management industry, reports The Tech, MIT’s student-run newspaper. (more)
Sponsored Stories Now Appearing In The Facebook News Feed
Yesterday Facebook began rolling out sponsored stories in the main news feed. At the end of 2011, when this announcement first broke, a Facebook spokesperson told us that these ads would be clearly marked “sponsored” so as not to confuse them with other stories. But it looks like – surprise! – Facebook changed its mind somewhere between the announcement and the rollout, and decided to call the ads “featured” instead of “sponsored.” This is confusing for the user but rather advantageous to the advertiser. Google+ Hangouts Add Screen Sharing to List of Collaboration Tools
Hangouts, the versatile video chat that continues to be the standout feature of Google+, got a visual and functional update today. The primary video feed is now bigger and better emphasized.
Hangouts also now offer screen sharing between users, a feature available on Skype and Apple’s iChat as well as more work-oriented collaboration platforms. (more)
Silicon Alley vs. Valley: Who Has More Tech Startup Cred?
Although cities like Chicago, Austin, and North Carolina’s Research Triangle have produced a number of Web-based businesses in recent years, the New York’s startup scene is growing exponentially. Will Reddit’s SOPA Blackout Make a Difference?
The next phase of Reddit’s war against the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) will begin next week when the social news community will black out its website for a period of 12 hours. In place of Reddit’s user-ranked news and lively conversations will be commentary and information about SOPA, as well as video of congressional testimony about the proposed legislation. (more)
