hackNY Expands Its Internship Program, Matching Student Hackers and NYC Startups

hackNY is a program that brings student hackers from universities around the country to New York City for paid summer internships. The hackNY Fellows are matched with startups in the city and participate in a 10-week program that includes mentoring and lectures by investors and entrepreneurs.

The program is co-organized by professor Evan Korth from NYU and Columbia University’s Chris Wiggins, and this will be its second summer. This summer, in the words of hackNY, will be “twice as awesome” due to funding that will enable it to double the number of students it can accept.

This means that applications have been reopened, and New York City startups are also invited to apply to host a fellow.

Last year’s students were matched with startups including Bit.ly, OKCupid, and Aviary. According to Korth, hackNY taught participating students “things they will not learn in traditional curricula about founding and joining a startup.”

The opportunity gives students a chance to see inside startup life, but also gives startups a chance to showcase the innovation that’s happening right now in New York (and hopefully woo new hacking talent to the city).
