A Look at the Demographic Data for Who’s Seeking Startup Funding

A little less than a month ago, we reported on ChubbyBrain’s new Funding Recommendation Engine, a service that will help entrepreneurs find suitable investors. The recommendation engine is based on the research from CB Insights and as such offers a “reverse due diligence,” so that startups can glean insights about where best to aim their funding pitches.

One month in, ChubbyBrain has released some of the demographic information about those who’ve signed up for the service. And while by no means an all-encompassing study of the startup funding landscape, it is nonetheless an interesting look at the demographics of the 1173 entrepreneurs who’ve enrolled for the ChubbyBrain service.

ChubbyBrain’s Census Shows Trends for Geography, Age, Experience

One of the most surprising results, perhaps, is the location of entrepreneurs, with New York beating Silicon Valley. Of course, ChubbyBrain is a New York-based company, which may account for some of the lead. But it also points to the increasing popularity of New York as a startup hotspot, and suggests that some entrepreneurs are opting to try their hands at finding funding there, rather than simply relocating to Silicon Valley.

The data also shows that entrepreneurs who are seeking funding are not all “wunderkind.” Over two-thirds of users have at least 10 years of work experience and over 40% had at least 15 years of work experience.

And while we talk a lot about early stage and seed funding, the ChubbyBrain data is a good reminder that the search for funding is ongoing, with nearly half the companies saying they’ve already launched and 17% indicating they’re already making money. Over a third say they’ve already received funding of some sort from angel investors or VCs.
