The European startup incubator Seedcamp announced today the launch of Seedcamp Johannesburg, the organization’s first event in Africa. A Mini Seedcamp will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa on August 11, and applications for the program are now open.
Entrepreneurs from both Europe and Africa can apply to the Mini Seedcamp.
In making the announcement, Seedcamp says, “We want to reach out to new locales and markets to meet the great entrepreneurs we are missing who are located beyond Europe – after all, we have seen that the underserved Eastern European markets develops great companies like Erply, Ubervu, and Brainient – some of the former Seedcamp winners. We are excited to take Seedcamp global and Africa is a great place to start.”
The World Cup has certainly drawn our attention to South Africa, and the country is home to several tech companies including the website creator Yola, as well as part of the development team for the cloud computing startup Nimbula.
As Inc recently wrote in an article on incubators, initiatives like Seedcamp, Y Combinator, and TechStars speed up the startup process by providing entrepreneurs with not just funding but with mentorship. Seedcamp’s venture into South Africa intends to help spread that opportunity south of the equator.
